1. Send a photo
Text or email a picture of the damage, plus your year, make, model and trim. Two minutes of your time removes most of the uncertainty from everything that follows.
What the photo settles: whether it is repairable, what glass the vehicle takes, and whether there is a camera behind it. What it cannot settle is edge damage on a dirty windshield, so a wipe first helps.
2. A number, before anything is ordered
You get the price and what it covers — glass, moulding and clips if the vehicle needs new ones, calibration if the vehicle needs it. If you are claiming, that is handled at this stage. If you are paying yourself, this is the figure.
Two honest caveats. A repair can occasionally reveal itself as a replacement once the resin goes in and the break turns out deeper than it photographed. And a vehicle that turns out to need static calibration in an unsuitable location may need to move. Both are told to you at the time, not billed afterwards.
3. The part
Common vehicles are usually available quickly. Anything with a heads-up display, an uncommon trim, a heated wiper park or an unusual acoustic spec can take longer. You are told which you are, because a realistic date beats an optimistic one.
4. Fitting, wherever the car is
Home, work, the office car park. Reckon on an hour to ninety minutes for a windshield, under half an hour for a chip.
The old glass comes out, the pinch weld is cleaned back and primed — this is the step that decides whether the bond lasts, and it is the step that gets rushed on a bad job — then fresh urethane, the new glass set, and mouldings and cowl refitted.
5. Cure time
Urethane reaches safe drive-away strength on a schedule set by the product and the conditions. Cold and damp lengthen it. You are told a specific time for your job.
This is the number that matters most and gets communicated worst across this trade. Before it, the windshield is not yet doing its structural job — supporting the roof in a rollover and backing the passenger airbag. It is not a formality and it is not padding.
For the first day or two: leave a window cracked slightly so pressure changes do not push on the fresh seal, avoid slamming doors, keep it out of a pressure car wash, and leave any retention tape where it is.
6. Calibration
Where the vehicle needs it, this follows the fitting — static on site if the location allows, dynamic on a road drive, sometimes both. You should get the calibration report at the end. More on what that involves.

Cold and wet are not excuses, they are chemistry.

A garage, a parking structure or a loading bay at work solves nearly all of it in winter. It is worth asking whether you have access to one before assuming the job has to wait for spring.
Common questions
Why do you want a photo before quoting?
Because a description over the phone is unreliable in both directions. People call a crack a chip and a chip a crack. Thirty seconds of photograph settles whether this is a half-hour repair or a windshield, and it means the van arrives with the right part instead of rebooking you.
What do you need from me on the day?
Somewhere reasonably level to work with room to open the doors, and the keys. Clear the dashboard and the front seats. That is genuinely it.
What if it rains?
Replacements get rescheduled. Bonding a windshield needs a dry surface, and moisture trapped under a urethane bead causes leaks and a weak bond that will not be visible until it matters. A covered space — a garage, a parking structure, a loading bay at work — solves it, so mention if you have access to one.
